Question from Terry:
I received Social Security Disability from 1971 through 1981. How do I get copies of my medical records from Social Security?
Response from Alan:
Although Social Security keeps a brief electronic record of your entitlement permanently, paper documents are kept only for a limited time. Because your claim was filed over 30 years ago, I do not believe the records will be available any more. They will be able to tell when you filed, what your earnings have been and what your payment amounts were, but little else.
Beginning in about 2005, Social Security began eliminating paper records and converting to electronic records for all aspects of claims, including medical records. These are much easier to retrieve, and may be available longer. However even these records will not be retained indefinitely.
