About the Artist: Kathryn Levitt

Kathryn’s love of art started when she was a child in South Florida.  Since she was very shy, art was a way for her to express herself. In high- school, she took art classes and later, earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from the Florida State University in 1994.  While in college, she studied in Florence, Italy for a semester.  This is where her love of art and artists truly flourished.  Seeing some of the most famous pieces of art in person gave Kathryn an appreciation for art she was never able to achieve from a book.

In 1997, Kathryn was diagnosed with a very rare and life-threatening lung illness, called Primary Pulmonary Hypertension.  She carries a pump with her 24/7 which administers a drug, via a portable IV, into her heart through the catheter that has been placed in her chest.  Her art is a great way for her to cope with the stresses of living with a chronic illness.

Kathryn is married and the mother of a beautiful girl.  She is teaching Language Arts now and paints in her free time.  She has encouraged her daughter, Emily, to express herself through drawing and painting and it is now something they enjoy doing together.  Kathryn is inspired by the colors and emotion of van Gogh, the whimsy of Mary Engelbreit, and the vision of Georgia O’Keefe.  She loves painting everyday objects in bright colors with decorative patterns and flowers and her medium of choice is high-viscosity acrylic paints.

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

Georgia O’Keefe

Kathryn, what fun your work is! I love your bold use of color. Do you know the name Laurel Birth? She turned her art into a greeting card and fun jewelry empire with bold presentations and recently I saw a television segment about her. She's quite ill and managed all the same to do so much.

Keep up the good work! I look forward to seeing more from you.

Thank you for sharing your paintings. Isn't it fun to have some whimsy in life? Please post more of your work as you continue to paint.

I taught Language Arts (English & literature) for 33 years. I "retired" last year when PH zapped my energy and brain too much.

Kathryn, I love your paintings. I wish the pots and pitchers were real, too! I want one of each.
