About the Artist: Nancy Stearns

I have so many crafts and projects that I would like to finish that I can’t imagine ever being bored.

Knitting – The last two winters I made over 250 hats and donated them to cancer hospitals/clinics in Colorado and Wyoming. A friend spread the word of my project and collected yarn that her co-workers donated. I promised myself that I would stop making the hats when all the yarn was gone. At times, I thought the yarn basket did not have a bottom. I have also knit 30 “Breast Cancer Awareness” dishcloths for an awareness walk that my sister helps host. She has already requested that I make more for next year’s walk.

Quilting – I am a “reluctant” quilter: the required math is sometimes more than my oxygen-deprived brain can handle. I do continue to work on the blocks because my two sisters and I challenge each other on our yearly quilt quests. I make the quilts from these trips because they bring back such wonderful memories of our trips to quilt shows and quilt shops.

Sewing – Sometimes, I make tote bags and other small projects for special gifts.

Rug making – This is my true passion. I remember my mother working on these rag rugs when I was a child. I inherited her rug frame, and two years ago, I began making the rugs. It requires no “brain power” and is very calming. It takes up to a week to finish a rug. I use them throughout my house and give them to friends.

Hi Nancy... Did you make ALL these quilts? When you said you were a "reluctant" quilter I thought you probably made only one or two... lol... but these are magnificant! I especially like the first one... what do the initials stand for? I love the pink bag you sent me ... I think I told you use it as a "limit" for my estate sale shopping... when it is full I either stop shopping ... or put something back & choose a different item... or, more likely, smush everything tighter so I can squeeze in one more item... lol! Thanks for sharing your photos... you are just SOOOOOO talented! Jeannie

Nancy, I see your talents go much further than your writing (really enjoy your diary). The only things I can knit are hats & scarves, but I can't imagine making that many!! That would take me forever. Love the tote bag! I always thought I wanted to learn to quilt, but I just changed my mind. I'm brain dead when it comes to math! They're beautiful, Nancy.

You are a person with so many talents. Now and in the future your mind will never become 'lazy.'

I love the rag rugs. Perhaps because my mother made rag rugs. The last rug my mother made for me is hanging on a bedroom wall.

It is a priceless work of art.

Hi Nancy, You really DO have lots of projects!!! I'm impressed... I especially like the rugs. In fact, I ordered the book you suggested and have started a pile of cotton and denim to use for the strips. Your quilts are very nice... if you and your sister ever make it to the International Quilt Festival in Houston, let me know. Mary and I used to go every year... it is huge and has so much of interest to everyone ... not just quilters.

Thanks for sharing your projects (hey, want more yarn??? lol... or have you put the brakes on that one?)

Wow! Nancy, you can do so many things! Your quilts are gorgeous...wel, everything is. Allen's mother and father used to make rugs during their long winters. Maybe if we had long, cold winters here, I'd have found a craft of my own.

Thank you for showing us some of your gorgeous work.
